The Most common surgical treatment for full-face rejuvenation is a facelift. The procedure is highly effective and involves removing excess facial skin to smooth even the deepest wrinkles. You may have considered consulting a West Hollywood plastic surgeon about your concerns but weren’t sure if you were ready for a full facelift just yet. “I want to look younger, but I don’t want a facelift.” Many patients share this sentiment and feel they’re still too young for such a dramatic procedure.
For those who may not be ready for a traditional facelift and a lengthy recovery time, we offer a minimally invasive facelift that can correct nearly all signs of aging and boost your confidence in the process – the mini facelift. The mini facelift is perfect for patients who are unhappy with their jowls and necks and who do not want – or do not need – a full facelift. Dr. Homer Hojjat performs mini facelifts for men and women to refresh the lower face and tighten sagging skin on the chin and cheeks.
What is a Mini Facelift?
The mini facelift is an age-defying surgery that lies somewhere between a neck lift and a facelift. Facelift surgery rejuvenates the cheeks, neck, and jowls, whereas a neck lift revitalizes just the neck. Mini facelift surgery combines these benefits by focusing on the jowls and the neck in the lower half of the face. The primary goal of the procedure is to correct sagging skin around the neck and jawline, creating a lifted, youthful appearance. To do this, cosmetic surgeons lift the skin upwards via tiny, hidden incisions. Then, they pull the muscle taut and redrape the skin to create a smooth surface.
A mini facelift may also be called a minimally invasive facelift because recovery and downtime are significantly reduced. During the procedure, we also remove excess skin further reducing the appearance of deep wrinkles. This results in dramatic results with a much shorter recovery time.
Mini facelifts successfully restore the lower third of the face and typically provide significant improvement for the middle third of the face and neck. Because mini facelifts only target the lower half of the face, you may consider having an eye lift or brow lift done as well to maximize your results. During your initial consultation, Dr. Hojjat will review your concerns and help determine which combination of procedures is best for you.

How Mini Facelift Works
Consultation for Mini Facelift
During your initial consultation, our team will work with you closely to determine your goals for surgery and help you understand what to expect. First, one of our highly trained medical assistants will note your concerns and take pre-op photos of your desired treatment area(s). Next, Dr. Homer Hojjat will explain which treatments are best suited for you and answer any questions you may have about each procedure.
Finally, we’ll review your complete medical history and perform a pre-op physical exam to ensure you’re physically fit for surgery. Before leaving our office, Dr. Hojjat will also provide you with detailed instructions for the time leading up to your surgery, immediately after surgery, and your recovery. Our team will be with you every step of the way to make sure your treatment is safe and successful.
Mini Facelift Procedure
During your consultation, Dr. Hojjat will thoroughly explain the mini facelift procedure, including the specific techniques that will best treat your problem areas. However, every mini facelift follows the same basic steps.
Step 1: Although it is often called a minimally invasive facelift, the mini facelift is still an invasive surgery. Consequently, all patients will require either general or local anesthesia.
Step 2: The modern mini facelift utilizes a less aggressive technique than the traditional facelift. Once you’re under anesthesia, Dr. Hojjat will make small incisions around your ears and hairline. These incisions are strategically hidden under the sideburns and along the natural contours of the front of the ear.
Step 3: Next, Dr. Hojjat will pull the skin tissues upward through the cheeks to correct any sagging skin and diminish fine lines and wrinkles. He will also manipulate the underlying tissues in the skin by lifting and pulling them up, then removing any excess tissue. Finally, the skin is trimmed and re-draped, and the deep layers are tightened to create a smooth complexion and a more defined jawline.
Step 4: Once the procedure is complete, Dr. Hojjat will use sutures to close each incision and apply recovery garments to facilitate healing.
Benefits of Mini Facelift
While traditional facelifts can produce transformative results, some people are intimidated by such a dramatic, invasive surgery. Similarly, many of our patients feel that they aren’t ready for a facelift and would rather start with a more conservative anti-aging treatment. Fortunately, the mini facelift can effectively address significant signs of aging – without the discomfort and inconvenience that’s often associated with full-face surgical rejuvenation.
These are the top benefits of a mini facelift:
- Diminished fine lines, creasing, and deep wrinkles on the face and neck
- Natural, rested, and youthful contour to the face and neck
- Reduced bruising, swelling, and pain during recovery
- Boost in self-confidence
- Significantly decreased recovery time
- Minimized scarring
- Shorter procedure time
- Long-lasting results
Candidates for Mini Facelift
Both a facelift and a mini facelift involve making incisions to help remove and pull up sagging, excess skin. However, a mini facelift only addresses the upper neck, jawline, and lower half of the face. For this reason, ideal candidates for a mini facelift are people with laxity, or loose skin, along the lower part of the face or the jawline. Other suitable candidates may want to improve the appearance of their lower face and achieve anti-aging results but do not want the long recovery associated with a standard facelift. Potential patients should also be in good physical and mental health and have realistic expectations for surgery.
Generally, most patients between the ages of 30 and 65 who have retained some elasticity in their skin are eligible for a mini facelift. However, it is important to realize that this treatment is not for everybody. For example, patients with excessive loose skin on the neck will likely need a standard facelift for optimal results. Similarly, much older patients who have more severe drooping and jowl skin may require a full facelift.
A mini facelift can address:
- Deep wrinkles and fine lines on the lower face and neck
- Deep creases around the mouth, often called “marionette lines”
- Formation of jowls beneath the chin
- Excess, loose skin along the neck and jawline
- Loss of skin elasticity on the face and neck
Recovery from Mini Facelift
A mini facelift does use fewer and smaller incisions compared to a traditional facelift. However, it is still considered an invasive surgical procedure. Like all types of surgery, mild side effects are completely normal and to be expected. The most common side effects include pain, bruising, and swelling. Still, the recovery process for a mini facelift is much shorter and more convenient.
After surgery, our office will follow up with you several times to monitor your healing process. Our team will also provide you with a comprehensive post-op plan to ensure you get the best possible outcome from treatment. Your plan will include instructions and everything you can expect, such as estimated recovery time, pain management and medications, compression garments, and anticipated activity levels.
As a safety precaution, we require that a friend or family member stays with you for at least 24 hours after mini facelift surgery. Then, for the first week or two, you will need to limit your activity significantly, which could include restrictions on travel and work. We also ask that you refrain from exercise until you’re cleared by Dr. Hojjat, usually around three weeks post-op.
After about seven days, we’ll arrange an appointment to remove your surgical stitches. At this point, you may still be experiencing some bruising and swelling. However, both should decrease to “socially acceptable” levels within 10 days. Overall, it takes several weeks to fully recover from a mini facelift. Most patients are comfortable returning to work and other everyday activities after 7-10 days. For comparison, this period is typically three weeks following a full facelift.
The final results of your mini facelift will be evident in about 4-6 weeks and are considered permanent. To preserve the results of your mini facelift for as long as possible, we recommend a comprehensive skincare routine, laser treatments, and other non-invasive anti-aging treatments, such as dermal fillers. Dr. Hojjat will work with you to maximize and maintain your results.
